Watching the free-to-air television networks have been crying for years over ad breaks; many have called for the abolition of ad breaks, with no success. So the BBC has invented a new ad break type, which it calls a “Sentinel Dingle.” The Guardian sums it up this way: The Sentinel Dingle, which the BBC described as “a small and short break from the action”, was first screened during the Olympic opening ceremony in Rio. It was inserted into the main news bulletin, then broadcast on the BBC’s red button service, by the BBC World News presenter Krishnan Guru-Murthy. This is a new type of ad break. The Guardian has a great summary of the break which is worth reading, but here is what it is: The Sentinel Dingle has been designed to make it easier for people to watch the News at Ten, the flagship news programme of the BBC’s national news team, on the channel’s main page. It takes up less space than the traditional ad break, and is designed to be quick. It was used during the Rio Olympics, where it appeared in the main news bulletin and on the BBC World News channel. The break, which is triggered automatically when a news bulletin is beginning, is designed to be a short, 30-second pause, as opposed to the current 60 seconds. There have been many attempts to replace the ad break. So far none have been successful. I could not watch the News at Ten for years as BBC programmes did not have ad breaks, but I am glad to have them again. I am also glad to see this attempt to ban ad breaks on the News at Ten, as it will give it more space. I have been amazed at the length of the recent ad breaks on the News at Ten, but I think 3 minutes will be better. A BBC World News video has a clip from Rio of a (very
