Q&A

Q: What is Korean medicine?

A: Korean medicine was oriented from Korea and developed through steady exchanges of the research of the human body, and it looks to explore the structure and function of health promotion, disease research methods, and technology for its purposes. (Wikipedia KR)

Q: What are the characteristics of Korean medicine? How is it different from modern medicine?

A: One big difference from modern medicine is that Korean medicine (used interchangeably with the term "oriental medicine") considers the human body as a living organism, rather than a reducing entity. It is widely believed in Korean medicine that a human body is an individual cosmic being, perhaps even another universe, and that there are flows existing between organs that seem unrelated to each other, which makes a crucial difference in how it approaches the methods of treatment. In other words, Korean medicine looks at the human body from a holistic and insightful point of view.

As to the area of focus in treatment, while modern medicine identifies micro changes (pathogenesis) to be causing diseases and attempts to target them, Korean medicine holds a relatively more macroscopic view of where and how diseases develop.

An oriental doctor diagnoses a disease through a comprehensive analysis of the information collected through long-established diagnosis routines. Based on this, they then proceed to apply traditional practices such as acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, chi kung, tuina, as well as some of the newly applied and developed treatment methods.

In the West, Korean medicine is often regarded as alternative medicine or therapy, which is unlike where it fits under the Korean Medical Law. In Korea, Korean medicine is categorized to be mainstream alongside modern medicine, just like how Chinese and oriental medicine play a huge role in the medical field of China and Japan, respectively. Q: How can I become an Acupuncturist (DAOM,L.Ac) in the US?

1. Earn your bachelor's degree

Before you attend an accredited acupuncturist program, you must first earn your bachelor's degree in a related field. Some acupuncture schools require a completion of at least two years of education from a bachelor's degree program. Many programs make it a qualification to earn a bachelor's degree in a relevant field.

You can typically earn your degree in any field, but getting one in biology or anatomy can give you a strong start in learning more about medicine and the human body, which is what your study will be centered around in your master's program.

2. Enroll in an accredited program

Once you've graduated from an undergraduate school, you can apply for a program with the accreditation from the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. This program gives you an in-depth study of acupuncture and other treatment methods to deal with various injuries, illnesses or serious medical conditions.

Some courses offered in this program include diagnosis and treatment techniques, oriental herbal studies, biomedical clinical sciences and integrated acupuncture and herbal clinical training. After successfully completing the program, you can officially earn your master's degree and pursue your license for legal practice in your state.

3. Receive your license

Many states require you to obtain a license from the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) to practice legally. Look through and research your state's requirements for earning a license. Even if your state doesn't require a license, employers may still list it as a requirement in their job description.

To earn your certification, you must graduate with your master's degree in an accredited program. From there, you'll need to take a clean needle technique course, which will guide you through methods of cleaning and using needles for various acupuncture treatments. Following the completion of the course, you must take several exams that touch on subjects like acupuncture, biomedicine and the foundations of oriental medicine. Once you pass these exams and meet other requirements, you're legally licensed to practice acupuncture in your state.

4. Gain on-the-job experience

Once you're licensed to practice in your state, you can work in an acupuncture medical practice. You typically start out by shadowing other acupuncturists to understand common techniques to follow and learn how a clinic operates. This experience is especially helpful in developing additional skills to effectively perform the role and even conduct your own acupuncture treatments.

5. Pursue additional education

If you'd like to carry out more complex acupuncture tasks, you might want to pursue a Doctor of Acupuncture degree. This typically takes around two additional years to complete following your master's degree program. There are some advanced practices that require a doctorate degree from candidates.

Even if the job you apply for doesn't require this degree, it is helpful to still have it in your resume, as it can make you stand out from other candidates. It's also a great idea to pursue this degree if you plan to open your own clinic or conduct advanced research on new herbal techniques or methods.

Q: As a Christian looking to go on a medical mission trip, why is it good to become a Korean Medicine doctor?

There could be various reasons, but from a mission trip standpoint, one of the benefits is the simplicity of carrying out the practice in foreign countries. All you have to prepare for a medical mission as an acupuncturist is just a Traveling Acupuncture Kit. Also, you can obtain oriental medical license relatively quickly in the mission fields.
